Some newbie questions regarding link building

So i finally decided to bite the bullet and try to put up a website of my own. Seeing that link building is the most important aspect of a website, i have been reading a number of posts/articles and while i have come to some understanding regarding the process, there are some doubts which i hope that DPers will help try to clear.

    1) Article Marketing: While not completely a link building method, i have read that it is one of the two best methods to get the initially traffic and backlinks for your site. Not only do you get backlinks from the article directories itself, if your article is interesting, you also get backlinks from other sites/blogs if they publish your article.

Now almost all of the articles that i have read suggest the following "strategy": write an article, publish it to ezine, wait for it to get accepted and then submit it to various other directories. My question is will the other directories reject the article because of duplicate content. Also it has been suggested to create around two to three ezine accounts so that you can submit a bigger number of articles rather than wait for them to upgrade your account...is it according to their TOS? I mean i dont want to get banned or something :)

    2) Directories: This is the most confusing aspect of link building. Some say that submitting to any and all free directories will not only be useless for your site..but will prove to be harmful that could see your rankings plummet . Instead you should submit to a few very high ranking directories (which are almost certain to be paid directories) and concentrate on getting high quality links through article marketing, blog posts or writing articles to other related websites. However others say that submitting to free directories is the best way to build high pr links which will give a boost to your website...which one is true? And maybe i might be asking a trade secret :) but how do you find related blogs to comment/write posts on?

no directories dont check whether the submitted site has duplicate content or not, they will approve the page if it is submitted in proper category & is not in any way trying to spam their directory

Directories - submit to a very few acknowledged quality ones, like dmoz, BOTW etc, and forget the rest.

For the article thing - why not just write 200 words and then try it out?

I think it's better you read some articles and blog posts of famous bloggers. They'll answer your questions.

I would have to agree with pro.seods... it will take a lot more than these kinds of directory submissions.

Regarding the article submissions, just go for it. Submit to them and see what they say. Don't wait, just get going. Time is money and you don't want to waste it. If they don't accept your submission then it's really no big loss, and you will know next time.

    Go for it!

Directories suck, don't bother them until you reach the Link Wall (which takes a long time). I'd focus on article marketing.

Personal advice...outside of DMOZ and paid Yahoo directory or BOTW.....don't bother with Directories. Google is looking at most of them as complete link farms right now

A few of the best directories to target as far as getting valuable links are probably the following:

1.Yahoo! Directory: The Yahoo! Directory is the biggest and oldest directory on the web, and one of the few directories that can send direct traffic. While the $299.00 annual fee may seem steep, a PageRank 8 link is a pretty valuable commodity, especially when it can bring a lot of associated traffic.

2.DMOZ: The Open Directory Project (DMOZ) is a free, volunteer-run directory. Google and many other sites pull directory information directly from DMOZ. It’s a Page Rank 8 link and it’s totally free. What are you waiting for?

3.Starting Point: This general directory lists new sites on the same day they’re submitted and users can vote to promote your site. The $99.00 submission fee gets you yet another PageRank 8 link.

4.Business.com: A huge business-related directory. Mostly intended for B2B products and services. PPC sites receive preferential listing, other listings are alphabetic. $199.00 per year for a PR7 link.

5.ExactSeek: This is a relatively large meta tag-based search engine. No specific focus per se, but it is free and PR7. For around $12.00 you can get a featured, top 10 listing for your selected keywords.

6.Best of The Web: One of the oldest web directories around, BoTW provides a solid PR7 link for $69.95/yr or $149.95 one time. Sites are reviewed relatively quickly and listed alphabetically by category.

7.Librarians’ Internet Index: A fairly selective, but free, PR8 directory. They will only include sites with quality, freely available content.
