Okay so I have some questions about my first go at adwords. For the last two days, my ad has recieved 3,883 impressions. I have an overall CTR of 1.77% but my main keyword which has gotten 68% of the impressions has a CTR of 2.25% (good, bad, okay??) Now, here is my question: So far this has yielded a total of 68 clicks which go to my landing page (currently three pages deep, making more) What is a good amount of conversions from the landing page to the merchants page? Right now I have sent 33 of the 68 clicks onto the merchants page. So that is a click through rate on my landing page of about 48%. Is that a good number? I havent been able to find much info on that. Actually for the last day since I changed the landing page, my click through rate from the landing page has been about 70%. Also, I havent seen a sale yet on the 33 clicks to the merchant page. I am just wondering kind of when I need to start looking at massive changes or if I should just let this one ride out a few more days and see if the sales start happening? Thanks!
Congrats! You are doing well for a first go at Adwords. Ctr's of 1-2% will get your click price down and traffic up......and your landing page ctr of 70% is exceptional. Now the final test here is will the merchant convert those visitors. Making sure your keywords, ads, landing page and merchant offer are all relevant......then run your campaign for about 100-300 clicks in adwords and check results. Then look at profit and decide if you continue or can it because of a loss.
IMO, I start looking close at my campaign after 50 clicks. Check keywords, landing page and the offer. CJ
Excellent, thanks for the info. I will probably make a final call somewhere between 50 and 150. Unfortunately at this point however, I am not sure if its looking good. My overall click through from my landing page is now actually at 71% so people are definitely going on to the merchants page from my page, but thats it. If a sale doesnt happen soon, then what conclusions are there to make? 1. The merchant sucks (strange because it has very high gravity) 2. My visitors are not targeted correctly? I find the 2nd one strange too being that if they werent interested, then I dont see why they would click on past my landing page. Or on my text ad in the first place.
...following your points......, 1. Change merchants for same/similar product and see if it converts better 2. Could be......keep adding adgroups & keywords and track everyone if the merchant or affiliate network provides tracking for sales. HTH
Just one point - a CTR of 1.77% is good... if your advert is appearing 6th or lower (though it varies from campaign to campaign). If your advert is in the top 5, you should really aim for a higher CTR if you want a great Quality Score. What is your advert's average position?
Okay my overall CTR for every keyword is now 1.87% with an average position of 3.6 My best keyword with well over 50% of my impressions has a CTR of 2.18% with an average position of 3.3
It's not terrible, but it could certainly be a bit better. To be fair, it depends on how well-written your competitors' adverts are. As a general rule of thumb, if I was in position 3-4, I'd be looking for a ctr of 3% - 5%. That said, that's after a few months of constantly testing new adverts, so if your campaign has only recently gone live, it's a very reasonable start. Just keep testing new adverts, and look around the interweb for tips on advert-writing. Here's my guide... http://www.epiphanysolutions.co.uk/google-adwords/adwords-advert-text Hope it's helpful...
Thanks for the info so far everyone. Okay here is where I am at now, and I am just struggling on where to go. Running since the 17th of August Impressions: 10,624 Clicks: 209 Two keywords have 80% of those clicks, and CTRs of over 2 percent. From those numbers I have 97 clicks from my landing page to the merchant page, so about 46%. Absolutely no sales at this point, and obviously the google charges are adding up. Is it fair to conclude that my top two preforming keywords are sending junk traffic to my landing page and ultimately the merchants page?
I'd look at your adverts. Your advert needs to achieve three (usually conflicting) objectives. 1) Quality Score - you want your keyword in there, near the top, ideally. 2) Maximise CTR - you want people to click on your advert, so entice them in by saying what's great about you (rather than everyone else). And use eye-catching words - most people that don't click on your advert probably didn't even read it. 3) Maximise Conversion Rate - you only want clicks if they are likely to convert. Paying for somebody to visit your site, when they haven't got any intention of converting is just a waste of money. I can't tell you why nobody is converting on your site - it could be the site, the advert or link putting them off. The only way to improve your ctr is to keep testing new adverts, all the time. I never refer to the ctr for my campaign as a whole, since it never relates to my current adverts. If you've been writing new adverts, what are their ctr's? Just because they aren't converting, doesn't make them bad traffic (but they may be). Are the merchant's prices competitive? Do they look trustworthy? Would you buy from them if it was you searching for a whatever?
