Some functions missing RE reply with quotes & #

I tried to put some code in a post like with the old VB3 Code # but have noticed I couldn't, even with 1 or 2 clicks on the respond with quotes link. Might try again with three clicks on that "respond with quote" to see if that solves it, but that's a whole lot of hoops to go through to do so.

The # (code input facility) shows up for an OP but so far for me it has not showed up at all with 1 or two clicks on the "reply with quote" link!

    Any others noticed this?

I just tested again with both Firefox and Chrome, and both worked as expected. Maybe I'm not following you on what exactly you are seeing. Can you take a screenshot?

Never mind Shaun it is working now - though it still takes two clicks on the "reply with quote" link in order to make the icon show up.

Well yeah... the quick reply doesn't have a bunch of the options (it's a quick reply). Double-click takes you to the advanced reply.

IMHO that is still a bit confusing for the uninitiated, having to click twice in order to get full function.

I am used to it, as sussed out ages back if I needed to edit the title of a post I needed to click edit twice, but still I think it might cause some confusion for those who don't cop on to the need for a second click.

Well you can also get to it with a single click "Go Advanced". The double-click is just a shortcut for the advanced users.

    Cool

Have you noticed any other problems you can give a heads up on Shaun?

I ask as we are testing VB4 on my forum privately in the background as we speak and we have a few errors presently, so any advice/insights would be appreciated.

I think the Google ads could do with better functions personally. High and Low won't work for me as I have cartoons advertising under my nav so am wondering how we can still use that. Am hoping the ad placement thing may solve this but have yet to test to see how it pans out.

For the most part vB4 is workable as 4.0.2... I'm never one to just let stuff be "good enough" though, so I've made tons of minor fixes/enhancements myself.

Shaun in the fifth box down in VB options > PHPKD advanced quick reply - you can switch on further option icons for the quick reply feature I have noticed. I figure this means it is possible for you to add a few more option icons for quick replies here on DP

Yep... but the whole point of it is to be "quick". You could add the entire editor if you wanted, but it gets away from it being quick. :)

There will always be someone that wants whatever isn't on the quick reply option... which is why there is the "Go Advanced" if you don't want to type [code] manually.

Tis true Shaun - I get you - but can't you switch on a couple of extra icons for us lazy typers - like for example the code one and perhaps one or two of the other most used functions please?

It all comes down to the balancing act of functionality vs. simplicity. The code tag is one of the tags that should be left out of the simplified version in my opinion. If someone knows what the code tag is, they most likely know how to type it. The same can't be said for the functions shown on quick reply (quote, color changes, etc). But again, if you want it, it's as simple as a double click vs. a single click. :)

    That's interesting!

    From these choices >

    Allow Basic BB Code
    Allow Color BB Code
    Allow Size BB Code
    Allow Font BB Code
    Allow Alignment BB Code
    Allow List BB Code
    Allow Link BB Code
    Allow Code BB Code
    Allow PHP BB Code
    Allow HTML BB Code
    Allow Image BB Code
    Allow Quote BB Code
    Allow Undo & Redo
    Allow Copy, Cut & Past
    Allow Custom BB Codes

Are you sure you have things set right according to the user/member type?

For example allignment might be basic and perhaps could/should be available to those who may not want to add something like code/#

It's intentionally stripped down. When you start overloading users with too many options, it has the reverse effect, and people shy away from it.

Alignment for example is not widely used (I don't think I've used it once in 23,000+ posts). There really isn't much purpose in it other than if you are in junior high and/or want to spam a post. I can't think of any post that can't be done properly without aligning the text to the right or centered.

I would be more inclined to remove *all* formatting options from the quick reply vs. adding more.

That's an interesting outlook/insight Shaun - I am now considering what options to give/allow on my own forum, as I am trying to make things easy for the inexperienced but at the same time I don't want to make things any easier for potential spammers at the same time - so as you say, it certainly is a balancing act that needs some weighing up and thought put into things.

Saying that the new VB4 functions suddenly make a lot of sense RE this to some extent LOL
