So is stealing, but you don't call petty thieves murderers. Piracy is one of the worst possible crimes, equating copyright infringement to piracy is pretty stupid.

Petty thieves are called petty thieves, they are definitely not called murderers.

Software piracy is exactly what it describes.

I guess you watched too much of Pirates of the Caribbean :)

It is just playing with words, basically you can call it anyway you want, I prefer to call it software piracy.

I don't agree with piracy but we all know it will never be stopped. So companies need to think of other ways to make money with software. Not sure how but we will just have to wait and see.

I don't think the international price is expensive.. in Europe you have to pay around $1500 for Photoshop while it costs only $650 in the US. That's what I find extremely unfair. Anyway, God bless the US stores that ship to the EU & the strong euro. :D

One thing I'm worried about is that companies will eventually stop making software due to all the piracy..

I don't think this will happen IMHO, the software companies have more or less reverse the trends with armies of lawyers and WTO talks enforcing laws against software piracy. At current only 3rd world countries are rampant in software piracy but I would say that the companies are not enforcing not just because the countries are unreachable via laws but because it helps to promote their software and entrench their shares of their respective market segments.

Once the third world countries started to be more developed, the armies of lawyers will come and start enforcing the rules.

Not to sound harsh, if you can't afford it, do not use it. Try to find an alternative. In the age of the Internet and open source, a lot of software have their open source counterparts.

Years ago, I was big into pirated software, but I have zip on my computer now. I even ordered some of those "backup" copies they were selling for 1/100th of the price of the original. That got stopped pretty quickly. The problem with it was that you couldn't update without stealing another copy, then they got harder to find, and the P2P programs were crawling with viruses and the law trying to bust people for downloading, so I took it all off my machine, found freeware to replace it, and I was done.

No way am I going to jail over a copy of Photoshop!

So true! Unless you're a graphics professional, you don't need Photoshop. You don't likely need stuff like MS Office either, unless you're really running an office.

For the home user, there is plenty of freeware available that works just as well.
