So lately I've been doing the traditional link exchange programs and I've gotta say... the links are not adding up as fast as I like them to be. I've tried doing that whole wiki article thing related to my website and ref it back but someone took it down last week.(During which I saw some traffic coming through wiki ^_^) But I was wondering if it's worth it to do more social tagging with stuff like digg, del.icio.us, Technorati, Furl, etc. And try to build a link through that. Anybody that had success in social tagging that can share their story of how? Duely appreciated!
All the things you mention (wikipedia, digg, del.icio.us etc.) really only work if you have content people will be interested in. Specifically for wikipedia a link is only going to stay up if you have either a comprehensive site on a general topic, or a detailed niche page and try a link on a wikipedia-page on that subject. Links that don't fit either of these specifics are going to get pulled off and you will just waste volunteer-time trying to get them included in Wikipedia.
i haven't had that much success with social tagging but then again I don't really have any website that would generate the sort of buzz for those type of sites. It depends what your site is about and what you have to offer.
Yes: for business sites I don't think these things would work at all. Online shopping: maybe. Content-sites: it really does work.
