Why are social security numbers so important to keep to yourself? I really don't get why, cause they are just numbers.

The banks got smart and invented the term 'Identity Theft'. Someone uses your SSI number to rip them off and the bank blames you and tells you that you were a victim.

Think of a SSN as a password to something important. The secret password prevents people from signing into your account even though they may know your username. If someone knew your SSN along with a few other basic pieces of info such as your name and D.O.B, you are a definate target of ID theft and they have access to your financial life and could wreak havoc.

Just to echo what others have already said, they can pretend to be you. While it may not seem that big of a deal, knowing basic things like your DOB, full name could really kill your chances at life. They could get credit cards, and use them like crazy, and you would be held responsible. And there goes your credit rating. There goes your chance at getting a car loan. There goes your chances of ever getting a house. The list can keep going...

People can use your social security numbers and create an "identity"

People can open up credit cards, or bank accounts.
They then charge thousands and thousand, and your left with the bill.
Your credit gets f**ked up and you ccan never buy a home of your own or even a car

It's you identity, so it's not ust a bunch of numbers :)

I remember in school they would use the last four digits of you SSN for your lunch account.

Bottom line, allows people to screw over your credit rating, which American runs on, so harder to get a car, an apartment, etc.
