I am thinking of developing and starting a social networking site. Probably like FaceBook. Do you think it can make room in the market with quite a few big players around?

If you make it unique in some way sure. You have to have something the other sites do not offer.

There is always room for new players. To compete though, you may need to find a specific niche or a new angle or features. If you plan to compete head to head with facebook, it will take a lot of work (and money) but yes it is possible. If you create a social network for a specific niche (left-handed people of Inuit descent for example) you may be able to make a successful site.

I was thinking of something for webmasters. I think nobody did any social networking site for webmasters yet.

like DP meets Myspace? It could work if you do it right. Keep in mind though that its tough to appeal to webmasters as a whole, as they are a picky bunch.

Go for some type of sport

I was thinking of doing it

e.g. you could have sport related video/picture gallerys, clubs instead of groups etc

You can make it. I liked the idea about the Sports.....and about the webmaster too. Definitely, if you attack a Niche Market rather than a general audience, you could have success.

    Good Luck!

Best of luck. I did a huge social network aimed at models/talent/singles/businesspros http://www.websocials.com and it's been running since 2002. We had some pretty successful moments, HOWEVER will admit that when mys/youtube/fb came on the block they swallowed the industry, and us with it. Agreed that if you choose a niche not explored yet you may do well, but going all out with a social site is pointless nowadays. uvme.com - yewie (or whatever it's called), the next wave is paid social networking with downlinese etc. perhaps jump on that wagon if you're going full force.

    Best,
    NC.

It is difficult to compete! I launched a real estate social network in May of 2006 and we have grown to just about 13K members. We are considered a player for the real estate industry, but we have a long way to go!

Its difficult to beat youtube, facebook, myspace sites like that. That got too much money to spend on marketing. My pockets are way shallower compare to them.
I been thinking of it for last several months trying to find a niche/idea without much competition. Even with webmasters idea it would be difficult to get recognized well in the market. I should probably revise the whole plan again.

yeah it can work if you set it up right. I've been looking into social engine for a few weeks now and am considering purchasing a few licenses for specific niches and installs. Check out the 15 day trial and see if it's what you are after.

I have a weird idea but how about a social network for people that have mental illness. That is one area that is not targeted.

If you have a targeted subject to go with, YES, it can work. If you keep it open to all subjects, it'll probably be impossible to compete with the big guys.

I'm currently developing 2, maybe 3 social networking websites at the moment.
1 is a local site for the city i live in (Glasgow) its niche, very simple and will include a premium business directory, discussion forum, jobs and housing listings, local information and member profiles.

Also im developing a larger network which will include video hosting, live video streaming, revenue sharing, live chat and messenger ect...

There is plenty of room for "Quality social networking sites" for sure.

Try new ideas, new things as well as having the backbone features of a social networking site, try new unque ideas and see how well received they are by members and other people online.

I want to make a webmaster community but currently i cant think of a decent domain name to but :(

Good luck if you do decide to launch one.

Defo yes if you're thinking about doing it in a niche - and you'd better get some good code as Facebook really is easy to use (I love their picture upload scripts!)

You need a lot of luck with this one and having a great reputation will help - it's all about the the quality of the product you're offering I would say.

    Good luck tho :)

Before you start working on this it seems better if you build a large community at facebook and similar sites and later you can be able to invite them to join your social networking site. :)
