Thanks, just saw this while searching DP for some social networks... Nice list fellows.

I want to install one of them in my wife's holiday website, to give a more humanized touch to the site, but i can't decide wicth is safer and more appropriate, beacuse all she needs is a place for users talk about their holidays: a mix of blog comments but with a personal area, with pictures etc. A simple and yet girliiish kind of stuff :D

Anyway, thanks again for this great list. :)

That's a pretty big list, which is the best? I heard good things from PHPFox.

I would try Chameleon (well I've already tried it and am using it) http://chameleon.startsocialnetwork.com
or, if your network is for companies, like business social networking, BusinessSpace
http://www.business-space.org (this one i never used though)
    or some free solution.
Or, if you are a big company and can afford 200K+ for a social network, then JiveSoftware.
    http://www.jivesoftware.com/
Adobe for example has its community on this one. But to my mind this one is VERY overestimated and the first variants are the same but 300 times cheaper (well this is my opinion, I am not adobe nor a big company)
