I too have been looking for a good OS social networking script. I looked over the scripts on the first post that were on SourceForge and all of them had problems of one type or another. Many were for bookmarking, not networking or were in alpha or pre-alpha. The best looking one, OpenPNE, is primarily written in Japanese. However, by starting with these scripts and browsing around SF, I found out about another script.

AstroSPACES by Kirk Stebbler is an OS social networking script written in PHP. Version 1.0.1 is the current release and there is an active support forum. The AstroSPACES website, http://p3net.net/page.php?2 has this to say:

AstroSPACES is the world's first customizable, open source social networking solution. Powered by PHP and the Smarty template engine, AstroSPACES is designed with the administrator in mind. You can easily edit core files to add new functionality, or edit template files to change the complete look of the system. It is styled with stylesheets, so that users can also edit the stylesheet for their individual page.

I haven't installed this yet to try it. Does anyone know anything about it? AstroSPACES and Alicia seem the best OS scripts and I'm still waiting for Alicia to be released.

Spacester, http://sourceforge.net/projects/php-spacester was a fork of AstroSPACES, but appears to be in limbo at the moment while it is rewritten from scratch.

Thanks Nick_Mayhem. I was considering doing some kind of social networking site a while ago. The project is on the backburner now but I'll examine each of the scripts another time. Does anybody have any recommendations for the aforementioned list?
