all those features are in social engine, You need to buy few plugins to add those all features to your social engine based community site ..

    http://socialengine.net

but, price for the script including all wanted plugins would be around : 500$+

    -Thanks. :)

I'd go with the previous post as well.

    Elgg = Awesome!

We've worked a lot on it in the past 2 months for a client and the script is amazing. It has a lot of space for expansion.

Dolphin is free if you are okay with having their links in the footer of your site. You have to pay if you want these links removed.

I know OSdate from tufat(dot com) is a free dating script. You might be able to modify it into a social networking site.

Other than that, I've never seen a totally free social networking site. However, I'll keep checking this post to see what others are saying.

The OP said that Elgg is not supported by Dreamhost, so I am assuming that he cannot use that platform. ;)

Social Networking is really a phrase used to refer to a collection of common web-based social functions, such as messaging, profiles, etc. Jasonvan is correct - there are few good, free "canned" scripts of that kind out there. And the so-called free ones often have "gotchas" to them. I've rarely if ever have had a good experience with pre-made, multi-function scripts, and modding them is often a nightmare.

I do believe that, while Elgg may not be usable in this case, recommending a CMS of that type is a good idea overall. Just find one with the requirements that Dreamhost can handle. It's always a good idea to know your hosting platform first, then find something that works in it. I'm pretty sure all the major CMS to date (WordPress, Drupal, Joomla) can play well well, but again do check.

The reason a CMS is typically a good solution overall is because of the "on the fly" ability to add and subtract features. And, the top ones are FREE. You can build a nice social networking site using a CMS as a backbone, and pick and choose what specific features you want. All major CMS have profiles, forums (either native or bridged), messaging, social bookmarking, etc. Assuming that FREE is the goal, here are some no-cost solution possibilities:

WordPress MU + BuddyPress + SimpleForum (or BBPress) + any additional plugins
Joomla + Community Builder (or Joomunity) + Kunena Forum (or Agora or ccBoard) + any additional extensions

If you want to foray into Drupal, here is a link providing a nice list of social network nodes:
    http://drupal.org/node/206724
While Drupal can run on Dreamhost, I've read some Drupal webmasters complain of poor performance there.

Pligg is a CMS built specifically for social networking, and it is Dreamhost friendly as shown here:
    http://www.pligg.com/hosting.php

Many people try to go with canned scripts because they want to "set it and forget it," but in the long run a CMS gives you so much more power and the ability to truly build a site to your specifications. Just be prepared to put in a bit of sweat equity, but the pay-off is potentially very great. :)
