Social Network Discussion Thread

I am interested to talk to other social network owners or to anyone that would like to talk and share their knowlege about social networking.

I have launched a new social network 6 months ago and and now have 20,000 users. I achieved that all from just word of mouth and affiliate advertising where i pay $0.40 per sign up.

I spend about 1 hour a day managing my website right now. My biggest task right now is fighting spam.

If you have a social network how do you deal with spammers? How much time do you spend each day on your site.

What ads are the best to run on a social network? adsense? cpm? pay per lead?

I was talking about that earlier today. Do you think you can still be successful since myspace and facebook is out?

20,000 users in 6 months is good achievement I hope, I think both adsence/ CPM ads would be good to go with, also you can sell some of the space for advertisers who might be interested in placing ads.

Well everyone think that since myspace and facebook you can't be successful anymore. But to me i dont know have to make 30$ million per month to be considered successful. If i make 1% of that per month i'll be happy too. There are sites like tagged.com, bebo.com, hi5.com that are very successful websites.

Thanks to netpox for starting a thread like this..
May I know what type of script is good for a social network? Something like Dolphin, Phpizabi or a custom made one?

    Hi,

That is an amazing achievement to have 20,000 new users in 6 months, how many are active how many are spam? Do you have spam filters set up on registration to make sure only valid users are signing up?

If you base your entire revenue model on advertising you will be fighting an uphill battle. The PubMatic AdPrice Index reported that social networking sites receive on average around a .19 CPM rate!

Read more here: Increase Community Profits

What we tell clients is to build an internet business AROUND a social network. If you own a pet store build an online community for pets. If you sell sport drinks & energy drinks build an online community around "extreme sports" - sure works well for Red Bull. If you don't sell a product figure out a creative service to offer...event management works well for our clients.

The point is unless you become a facebook or a myspace you are going to be fighting an uphill battle the life of your business if you base it off advertising. Google paid some $900 million to sell advertising banners on myspace and they are even having trouble doing that...same with YouTube.com

    Be creative...

I own www.blogengage.com and fighting spam is hardcore lol. I moderate the site much more then you so you should fell lucky! I use pligg cms, best cms on earth.

I've been up now for about 7 months and currently have 2400 members. Advertising is only word of mouth! I started using Google adwords but meh I don't think I'm spending my money wisely with Google! Overall the site has been fun and I'm siting at around 5,000 - 8,000 uniques a month!

You are so wrong! Why do you have a proxy site? there are millions out there..if anything making another proxy site is a waste of time.

Buying a social network script and thinking you're going to be a successful social network in a month is not going to work. But why would you think that because of myspace and facebook you cant have another social network. Do you think everyone likes myspace and facebook?

I personally cant stand facebook. I think that sending someone a bumper sticker or a gift is retarded. Not everyone has the same taste. Yea myspace and facebook are huge. But do you think bebo.com, hi5.com or tagged.com are not successful? They make millions of dollars as well.

You dont have to make millions of dollars to be successful.

many social network started with fake accounts. but I guess having real people would be better although it is harder to invite people who when they see that you only have few members.

    USP USP USP USP!

    Unique Selling Point!
Thats so important, if theres nothing your site has which myspace doesn't, and myspace has something yours doesn't have, thats where I'm off!

Work on the mistakes of other sites, use it to your advantage.
Facebook-Too much going on, can't customize profile
MySpace-Very buggy, spam, customization via HTML can prove challenging to customize to less able viewers.
Bebo-Full of 14 year old chavs, doesn't allow BB code/HTML.

That list was done in honestly about 1 minute, spend some time, research your market!

guys, don't think just because there are sites simillar then your not going to succeed, facebook started after myspace and look at facebook now, it all depends on what you offer etc. start small first, start with a social network for your local city then expand, don't start with something thats gonna be world wide and hard to find, because if you get 5 people from each city in the world then no one will return, but if you have 5,000 people from the same city then those people will love it.
