For me both methods are important to have a successful outcome. Social Media is a good way to build a web audience in long term.
Classic Linkbuilding is still the number one priority for successful SEO...can't deny that Social Media is on the uprise...however...again, first comes Link Building and then SMM. I'd personally look at both ways to boost your website(s).... On a seperate note, social media requires a great amount of time and effort - if you are not willing to invest that and do SMM half-heartedly...you are about to waste your time and even risk people turning away from what you have to offer.
Social media can give you direct traffic but these traffic to not convert to sales etc, if you do link link building then it will help to get better ranking in yahoo, google or bing and so they can give you targeted traffic.
social Media and link building are completely different things. In social media, one has to create the social media strategies and implement them effectively while co-ordinating Marketing and PR Team, where as in LinkBuilding a SEO specialist takes the charges to build the links on high PR website so that website get good link juice and get PR.
I personally think that classic linkbuilding techniques are still better for gaining SERP positions. I.e. dorectory registrations will slowly give you rank, but those content and link farms are rarely visited by real visitor so you wont get any direct visits, however you will probably gain some visitors from organic search result page as the effect of gaining positions. Social service linkbuilding will give you more direct visitors, but the positions will stay down for one simple reason - social sites provide no follow links which cant be crossed by indexing robots. However if you tweet something from different very followed accounts, it will raise your positions for a few hours - it is an experiment we have done with my friends. SO bottomline of all this is that if you shoot for more visitors and you dont care about SERP positions, go with social linkbuilding
For SEO it is link building. Social media is good for traffic (almost instant traffic). For example a link in digg or reddit could be .. useful .. for how many days??? 1,2 .. 30?? But NO more than this.. While a backlink from a blog for example could be very useful for SEO no matter this factor (time!)
SMO and Linkbuilding can be one and the same. Social Media is a great way to provide unique content on social networks that gets shared across all sorts of blogs, websites and other social networks like Digg, StumbleUpon, Reddit, Twitter, Facebook and a number of others. A great way to build links is with pics and videos that others will want to share. If people are sharing content frmo your website on Twitter, FB and any other means they decide to share with, then you have achieved exactly what people want to get out of social media... Other people build links for you.
both are important. for longer benefits, use the classic link building but if you want quick viral use social media.
Thanks for your great information. base on what i have read, I therefor conclude that... Social media = traffic Link Building = Good ranking And it's better if both of this techniques will use.
