To me, SMO is the process of using people and networks to deliver traffic and grow links and content.

Stumbleupon, Digg, reddit, twitter, mybloglog, myspace, facebook, forums, blogs - basically any site that has an interactive community element.

Taking Digg as an example you might have written a good article that gets dugg by lots of people. By doing so, some of these people could be bloggers who might then write about what it is you have said. The net outcome would be an unsolicited one way link. Others might pick that up and link back to him and you too...and so on and so forth.

IMO a critical element to using SMO properly is to ensure that the site itself is capable of interacting in a social way. That might mean for example that you have a blog or a forum or pligg installed. It could take the form of having the odd button that enables people to digg or stumble the page/site. A look at the bbc site will show you how they use social bookmarking to enable people to share and connect with others.

It's a big topic, but that should give you a little idea.

Well to be very frank, the traffic from social media do not convert, if you are monetising your site with adsense

U get hell of a traffic from those sites but hardly any clicks on the ads-my personal experience

    Hey,
SMO and SMM are the new babies of WEB2.0 revolution.
SMO should build your SERP and PR and get you extra traffic.

There are many ways to do so:
Put SB (Social Bookmarking) icons on your page to direct the visitors to them.
Order SB Service here, at DP.

As SMO is the "next big thing", i compare it to directories.
For example, you can make a 2000 directory submissions while on SB you can get max 600 (And every SB with his own genre).

Soon there will be a tool to submit your Website/Blog Post/Etc to more then 400 SB's at once, i will keep you update.

Using social media is the same as link baiting.
