Social media and SEO ?

Can someone tell me if social media platforms, (face book,Instagram,Twitter,Tumblr, exc. have any effect on SEO ?

 

There are hundreds of factors that affect rankings. Social signals would be one of them but for the most part you do social media marketing for the benefits you get from social media.

 

Google denies that social media factors like sharing or likes are ranking factors but I guess these factors matter in impacting the rankings directly as well as indirectly. Say for ex: you create a blog and share it on social media and it is shared by many people then It might open new link opportunities for you. Some of them might link to you page/blog, which will boost your link velocity( getting links in a short span of time) and boost you rankings.

Besides even from social sharing you will get good visibility among your target audience.

Please note that when a fresh page gains lots of shares and mentions in a short span of time after posting, search engine notice them and put them in top. That is the reason, you might see fresh pages ranking in top for competitive keywords for some time. Google wants to give them opportunity be linked.

Most SE appreciate web sites and their efforts to be social. In this case you just need to do homework and have your web site social pages. Just do not consider that as additional source of links.
