I do think that social media like Twitter and FB can serve multiple purposes at once. To start they help a ton with SEO because you gain PR from their high PR home pages. Secondly they can drive significant traffic. Both sources should be cornerstones of any SEO campaign.
Are there any more definite sources that show social media (twitter, facebook, etc) affect SEO? I know that SM can increase traffic which will improve SEO. However, does anyone know if Google incorporated SM into its algorithm when ranking and crawling websites? I also know that Google has a separate results section from twitter and other SM sources. I see that people are making these statements with little or no backing. I would appreciate if anyone would provide proof or facts that SM affects organic searches and Google's methods of ranking sites besides the fact that SM can increase traffic through various methods.
