SB can be beneficial for your site. Depends on how you do it. Let's see here 2 scenarios: 1. You create bad content. You go to fiver and buy 500 bookmarks for $5. You think you are the king and everything it's going fine. Traffic is not increasing. Back-links with similar anchors increased. That's bad for SEO. 2. You create great content. People bookmark your posts because they find them useful. They are coming back sometimes to read again your post (again because it's useful). Traffic will increase in time. That's awesome for SEO, because people will save the bookmarks with different, natural looking for Google titles. Do great content and people will do the social bookmarking for you. Don't spend time on bookmarking your self, that's not logic.
Social Bookmarking sites are maybe one of the best ways to get some quality backlinks! Also, don't forget to work with guest blogging, article and forum marketing!
I am not really sure how to give you a RIGHT answer to your question... Some member mention that they are social bookmarking site are still in that position perviously and other disagree.

SMO is definately Best for Branding & traffic generation. although there are many key points to remember. But i still believe that business owner should concentrate on client handling & outsource there Business promotion activity to the professional already doing that.
