So I heard recently from a friend that a majority of the social bookmarking sites are using no follow links. Do you guys think social bookmarking is still a good way to build potential back links? I know if the site or story you're bookmarking is viral it will help a ton.
Most social sites are more about traffic and product recognition then backlinks. The goal and hopes of using them will be fore someone to stumble upon it and either become a member of your site, buy something, or like what they found enough to give a proper link. Back when most of these places first started, they were all followed links, heh, I think it's a win-win as each new one pops up the webmasters jump on it for back links. In turn, the sites get popular. Once the debt has been paid, they switch to nofollow, and then a more mutual relationship happens. The place gets less spammy, and and the end users are happy. It's these end users you are wanting, so there are still benefits in using such services. If it's ONLY back links you are seeking, then spend your time looking for good sites to swap or that are willing to link to you. If you have something broader in mind, then yes, social sites (networking, and bookmarking) sites are the way to go. If your landing page is worthy of being read, then the few moments it takes to submit your site will likely be worth the effort.
