Well Digg for instance isn't nofollow, so that would be a good link. Just because 20 people digg your articles don't mean you get 20 links you get one.

A few social bookmarking sites have an option to "Automatically" blog about the article which is a way to get MORE backlinks.

Don't discount Social Bookmarking for SEO its amazing, I remember my first front page digg article, I was getting backlinks for weeks from all these bloggers blogging about my site.

Your success would depend on the quality of every links that you get in social bookmarking sites.

I had a similar experience once. I used bookmarking and signature link advertising, and my minisite (~ 10 pages) got PR 1 in the next update. If what you want is a quick and big ammount of links (to start a site, or for a small site), social bookmarking is great.

Hmm people are right in saying that most social bookmarking uses nofollow but that doesn't mean it's bad or useless. If you successfully market in social bookmarking you will gain natural links from ontopic blogs as webmasters trawls Digg etc for related content.
It also sends you traffic as mentioned when you hit the home pages and high ranked member profile pages.

I have had no positive results from social bookmarking as well. It was a good way to waste some money!

Who needs rankings if they got traffic? [just kidding - but not quite]

    Traffic leads to
    return visitors leads to
    more links leads to
    better rankings.

Do you honestly care whether a thousand visitors come through google or through stumbleupon? Personally - I'm glad either way. A balanced visitorprofile includes visitors from all kinds of places, including but not limited to search engines.

you should add your site to the google webmaster tools section - then you can view which links they see - including the nofollow links.

If you bookmark a site on a social bookmark site - there is a link to it from your profile page, and each tag page on your profile for each tag you gave it, as well as the tag pages for the site as a whole. If another use bookmarks it, the process is again repeated. Not to mention that some people pull links from sites like del.icio.us (owned by yahoo) into other sites like stumbleupon and blogrolls.

Some people are smoking too much weed. Social Bookmarking is a definite positive thing. Delicious & Delirious are High PR wastes of time in my mind because of NO follow.. but you can defiinitely gain SOME pr and even "all in anchor" backlinks to your sites from others such as DIGG and STUMBLE. Best part is.... it's free. As far as traffic goes, most like that from stumble (people hitting the stumble button) don't really stay on your site.. But hey, just do EVERYTHING and see what works and what doesn't... what do i know ?

Social bookmarking may not the a magic ranking tool, but it helps getting huge sites crawled and drives some traffic to your sites, might as well be good for maybe PR1-2 from social bookmarking only...alot for something that's free and easy to automate.

If a website needs social bookmarking for link juice, it needs a doctor.

Good SEO involves dominating visibility on relevant channels of traffic. Higher search ranking is just one piece of the puzzle.

Social bookmarking can be a great tool for improving your traffic if it's done correctly, but
it will not affect your serp.
