Social bookmarking is a BIG waste of time

Social bookmarking is the practive of using bookmarking and aggregation type sites such as digg, reddit or stumbleupon to submit stories and ‘vote’ on stories you find useful. The more votes a stry has the higher is may rank and the more traffic it gets. Socail bookmarking is like traditional linking except there is a social element involving an online community.

Since 2004 social bookmarking has EXPLODED in popularity. Digg gets millions of pageviews a month and is rated as one of the most visited sites on the web. meanwhile webmasters and bloggers spend a great deal of effort getting votes and and trying to improve thier rankings on social networking sites in the hope of driving more traffic to thier sites

I have to disagree. I have used stumble upon to jump start quite a few sites and to bring steady streams of traffic to others.

It's all relative. In general your traffic will die within 2 days after you disappear from the front page on a site like Digg, or ANY major site.

Take it from me - someone who has been featured on YouTube, MySpace, Digg, SlashDot, etc. It takes consistent content to maintain that surge of traffic.

You are indeed correct. social bookmarking is definatly for the smallfries, but you gotta realize that people have to crawl before they run into webmastering.

At least it's a "safe" plan to get get slowly rather than a wild move to get heavy traffic and have the risk of burning your site alive by a lawyer or something like that.

It's good but not for ecommerce sites anyway. That's why it sucks.

If you offer some free content that is quick to take in it works well. If your site is higher in "effort" social bookmarking but not be a good choice.

Stumbleupon can work, but not as good as it use to because the growing popularity in webmasters trying to all get traffic. With digg and other networking sites like these it is becoming alot more work and harder to get to the homepage as there is more people trying to get there every day.

I signed up for stumbleupon 3 years ago.

Back then I'd hit the stumble button and I'd end up at someones website, it may be a joke site, a service, a game or whatever, but it was a real site.

Now it seems every site is a blog article, news story, or video. So how well can a service oriented site do on StubleUpon?

I have a service oriented website targeted at webmasters seeking quality traffic, how would you say it would do do on stumbleupon?

You need to find a social news site that is more specific to your offering. They are many Digg clones that are for a particular niche. They can provide a great amount of traffic if you find one. But don't expect them to come and buy something.

yes and no, most of the traffic you get is big, fast but useless, but it helps if 10% or more of this traffic gets interested in your site, but most of the trafic is useless indeed..

Social Bookmarking is NOT crap at all and can be very beneficial in certain situations. However; generally its not much good for generating 'converting' traffic directly.
