Soccer World Cup Vs Cricket World Cup

    Hi friends
I was recently observing the effect that soccer world cup had on Us. There was an article in our local daily that schools in the capital have postponed the weekly unit tests so that students can watch the final match wihout having to worry about the test. The principals of schools have instructed the wardens of their respective hostels to co-ordinate and facilitate late night soccer viewing so that the students don't have to miss the match because of being in hostel.

In offices most of the people were limited to cafeteria so they can watch the match in peace.I know of a call center which got a plasma TV installed on the floor so executives can keep a track of match on while on the call.

Markets are full of things potraying soccer and things appearing to be associated with soccer sold most.In fact i saw flower vases, Childrens water bottels, linens, hoisery, cleaning pans, vacuum cleaners and so on and so forth either in the shape of the soccerball or having one printed on it.

Now the point.Keeping all the excitement in mind do we feel that Cricket world Cup or Soccer Wolrd Cup both are on same platform or does one of the occupy a place superior to the other.

    What Say ya .......

This question can be answered depending on the region.
Only a handful of teams play cricket ,whereas Soccer's reach is universal.FIFA has more members than the United Nations.

Having said that, cricket is immensely popular in the subcontinent .The game is like a religion in parts of India and Pakistan. When you produce players like Sachin Tendulkar,Rahul Dravid,Wasim Akram etc,the popularity of the game is bound to rise.India does not follow football much barring the regions of Goa,Kerala and West Bengal. The attendance you get in a cricket match in the subcontinent, say for example in the Eden Gardens can easily outstrip some of the prominent soccer stadiums in Europe.

The reason that cricket hasn't spread much to the west stems from the fact that it is too long and slightly complicated to understand.Plus telecasts of international games are by and far few in the west.

Given the reach of the soccer world cup,you have to admit that on a global scale,FIFA beats the ICC.But restrict it to the subcontinent and some parts of Britain and Australia and cricket wins.

Both sports have their pluses and minuses. It just basically depends what sport the country tends to follow more.

Cricket is easy enough to understand but I don't see Cricket (or Rounders or Hurling or Field Hockey) doing well here as there is one close alternative in Baseball.

How many countries are competitive in Cricket on an international level?

Canada is playing the next world cup to be played in 2007 so next time America might be there in 2011; and dont worry President Bush had tried to learn how to play cricket during his visit to Pakistan

Well as far as India is concern it can go mad on any game, be it cricket, hocky (not agree with me?? lets have a final between India and south korea), Tennis and soccer.
Globaly, cricket stands no where near as Soccer, it has a huge huge fan base. even in most cricket playing countries cricket is not even 2nd most popular game, example in case: Australia, NewZeeLand, England etc etc..

Its only south asian region where cricket is so much popular, but we dont have a chance in any other game ;)

All right so uptil now Soccer is dominating over Cricket craze. I have gone through your views and somewhat agree but what about furure worldcups. Do ya think that we can have a craze like Soccer for cricket as well i mean can i expect to see the shadow of cricket on clothes, food, car accesories, water bottles and everything.

Football will always be more popular in my opinion, for the following reasons:

    1. Cricket games can last for days, which is too long
    2. Cricket requires more equipment; bats, balls, protection, stubs, as opposed to a football
    3. Cricket requires a lot more room to play, in populated areas, large open spaces are rare
    4. Cricket requires patience - a 5 year old kid doesn't want to wait an hour in a field till he can bat, football suits the attention span a lot more

I like both, but I probably prefer the English Premiership to the World Cup, whereas I would only watch the highlights of an international Cricket game.

ODIs last for only few hours, with lot of fun and excitment.

Wrong, We play Cricket even in a narrow street (and break window glasses :D)

LOL blitz, there is nothing called stubs in cricket, those are stumps or wickets
