I see a lot of people here, give information, tips and advice. Some I agree with and a lot i don't.

So here is my question, who out of you guys actually ranks top five google, page 1... for a decent keyword or phrase?
    and what for?

Hey leswoody....you should check your signature links. Two of them have an extra l after the .com and one has an extra period after the url. It's probably not the best strategy to target the same phrase on all of your sites either.

    Sorry to be off topic.

not sharing the niche or keywords, but for 1 site that is moderately competitive avg 2-5million SERPS

    4 #1 and 2
    40+ #1
    1 #1 for a generic word (26Million SERPS)
    1,000+ top 10
    3,000+ top 50

I get around 150K uniques/mth from this effort.

Another even more competitive niche 20-70 Million serps

    6 top 10
    15 top 25

I get around 15K uniques/mth from this effort.

This niche I face competition that spends 10's of K per month maintaining their top 3 spots.

None of this happened overnight - it took over a year to get my first #1, but I have kept it there with ever-growing competition in the niche. It took me over 2 years to get a generic #1 keyword and a fair bit of effort to keep it at #1

    Tips:

Have a site that offers something of value to visitors, such that your visitors are only too happy to blog about it and build links for you!

Get your on-page and on-site stuff right.
Build links with your keywords as the anchor text.
    wait for updates
    Build links with your keywords,
    wait for updates
    Build links with your keywords,
    wait for updates
    Build links with your keywords,
    wait for updates

and when you have done that do it some more.

    Google

Well I rank 5 for: affiliate marketing for beginners
Rank 5 for: top commentators widget
    Rank 15 for: top commentators

    MSN
Rank 53 for: make money online

That's about it though - I get trickles of traffic from small keywords around them

I have seen a huge jump in rankings in Google since the PR update

My best ranking is #1 for the main keyword in my niche. It has 15 Million results (which I consider moderately competitive). Getting there took about 1 year.

The way I did it was by getting my keywords in the page title, page description, H1, text of the page, and also that same term in a lot of other pages on my site (which puts heavy focus on that keyword for my whole site). Then I got back links to my site from other good sites with variations of the keyword.

That term only brings about 2% of my traffic. It's all the long tail terms that I'm #1 to #10 that bring the rest. Coincidentally I get 26% of my traffic from variations of the main keyword...to all those other pages with the keyword in it.
