    I agree to a certain degree but remember that SEs change their algos and your competitors their pages, if you want to compete you need to make the appropriate adjustments on your end as well. I know you are simplifying what you are saying but getting listed high in the SERPs is definite work.

    OR when the SEs algos change, OR your page content no longer stands the test of time, OR many other reasons. It is not only about the "bad apples" or "black hat tactics".

    "Common sense is not so common. - Voltaire" Being in the top of the SERPs means work - continual work, not sitting back and waiting. I may feel I am doing everything by the book - but the SEs algos dictate. Basic SEO strategies won't cut the top 10 - advanced SEO strategies will.
