so what's the current webmaster seo theory on the most recent google "thing"?

    Where is the consistent evidence for that? I think I find more irrelevant searches now than ever before.

    I guess to some degree it depends how you define "relevant". But I'm not sure universities and publications are always more relevant than the manufacturer or seller of a goods or service. For instance, you frequently see Amazon come up in the top ten for searches on some specfic item. How the hell are they in the top ten of relevance for any individual thing except "book sales"?

    People for some reason seem to form SEO theories based on articles and forum posts instead of actually lookin at the serps

    SERPS based on revelant links to all sites is a bad idea from the start. Try think about business sites. I'll never link to my competitors, just like they'll never do - and they are the most revelant sites for me! The point is G's (and other SEs) results can't base on this factor, it's unnatural case (it'd be workin' only for blogs or entertainment sites).
