that your website rank well in Search engines,

to have something that people like and

    - spread to other friends (via email or adding a link on their blog/myspace)
    - bookmark on social bookmarking websites

    what else ?

Little confused, but a great way to rank well in search engines is to have quality / targeted backlinks.

Does it really work that well? I spent weeks getting links for a site I ended up selling because I couldn't get anything going. I bought links on hundreds of sites and had no real results. Is there a secret to this I'm missing?

A good way to increase ROI is for a good designed website that attracts your visitors eyes to the things that will make you the money and also to get some good targetted traffic which is normally given to you from the major search engines.

Try to implement some sort of URL ReWrite on your server. Depending on whether your site is hosted on a Unix(Linux) server or Windows based server there are several options you can consider. Consult your host provider and google the options available to you.

Search engines, especially google, LOVES URL Rewrites..

I use ISAPI Rewrite for my site (since it is hosted on a windows machine)

Actually search engines love clean urls, a well coded site has that without using URL rewrites.

Yeah but when you have a site which generates pages on the fly (which most database driven sites are), it is very difficult, if not impossible to write static pages and achieve the results you are trying to achieve.

Query strings are part of most sites, and to get those clean URLs you are referring to, you use server side URL rewrites and create those urls.

Just like anything else it depends on the competition for the keywords you are targeting!

If you purchased 100 high-quality links that targets one keyword but your competitors have thousands of inbound links for the same keyword then you have not done nearly enough work!

For the process to work at all you must find keywords that you have the capability of being competitive for. If the first page of results for your keyword includes only pages with millions of inbound links for that keyword then it is going to take you a very long time to compete with them.

Locate keywords for your inbound links that you can compete with and start posting those links a couple a day, EVERYDAY! If you remain patient and use other quick methods to generate the traffic (PPC,etc.) it will work for you.

Just like the movie said... Built it... and they will come!

    Good Luck.

Let's examine this example a bit.

Say you have a web page within your site that explains how to create myspace layouts. Also, let's assume that your page is generated "on the fly" by grabbing information from database or files. Instead of having the url that reads www.mysite.com/article.php?artID=7 you would have something that reads www.mysite.com/article/how-to-create-kick-ass-layout-for-myspace.html

Now you can see the benefits of it. You have the "how to create kick ass layout for myspace" inside the URL. This will give you better rankings.

It is true though that google puts a lot of weight on backlinks, so YOU MUST do some work in that regard but having the URL rewritten to be SEO friendly helps quite a bit.

Hope this explains it a bit more.. and If you have any questions, let me know. I will answer any questions to the best of my ability.
