So let's avoid over SEO-ing... How?

    Hello,

Opinions might differ on what might be considered "over SEO-ing"... I'd like to know what you think...

I believe that it's a sign of over SEO-ed content, if:

-page title, heading, file name and link pointing to page have *SAME* text (e.g. an article's title)
-image files within an article are keyword-optimized
-keywords repeat at least 5 times on the same page
-image alt texts match primary keywords used in the respective article
    ...etc.

Lately I started NOT USING alt texts at all. Didn't feel anything. Didn't hurt, didn't help... :p

Yes, you are right. It is over optimization.

I have started doing my onpage very differently and not really targeting an exact keyword but rather a key phrase.

For example if I'm trying to optimise for 'product name deals' I will do something like-

Title: Find The Best Product Name Deals Online
Meta Desc: Compare Product Name deals across the web in a couple of clicks and save stacks of cash!
H1 Tag: Top 5 Product Name Offers (do an offers based search in Google and you will see it highlight Deals as a keyword even though you searched Offers and vice versa)
Article Body: If your going to buy Product Name then compare deals online first. (here I don't use the exact keyword at all but include the words naturally throughout the sentence)

That is pretty much it, I dont do any image/alt tag stuff and keyword density never creeps over 1% while combining synonym words (deals / offers) which further enhances relevance.

Around a year ago I noticed a lot of sites were ranking that didn't even mention the exact keyword they were ranking for once on the entire page. So I started to reduce my overall optimisation on page and have not had any problems ranking sites since doing so. It also ensures that I'm generally protected from the Penguin :p

There is much less of a focus on on page optimisation now than there was 12-18 months ago

As far as I know, so as long as you keep the content flowing, and so as long as you don't let the content seem spun, then it's all right ..

Yeah! Over SEO working is harmful for a site because after new updates Over Optimization of a site get it penalized by Google.
