yes, it is legit. In my opinion, relevant comment will not get deleted by admin.

If you write a good comment that stands out from the crowd, people tend to click on the link, which will bring some targeted traffic to your site.

Good comments should be rewarded with a backlink also. However, the way you go about commenting and including a link will clearly demonstrate whether you are there to contribute or merely to take a backlink. So, try to post comment in order to join the conversation not for link.

It’s better to spend 15 min in day and post one value comment than spending couple of hour’s everyday on number of worthless comments.

Posting relevant and good comment on others blog can give you traffic. It's always good practice to spend some time on others blog and post a good comment there.Never post comments like "Nice blog" or "Thanks for sharing this info" etc.
If you will post a good and relevant comments on others blog, it will give you 2 benefits.
    1. The chances of your comment got approved by admin increases.

    2. Once your comment got approved chances of people visiting your blog will also increases and you can get traffic to your blog.

it can be a good way to get backlinks, BUT, it's labor-intensive. Using autocommenting systems usually gets you knocked up fast as a 'comment spammer', because the quality of the comments isn't good enough ('Great Site! Keep up the good work!).

sitefling says: (search google: site:sitefling.com seo filetype:pDF) Easiest way to get backlinks is to set up a google alert on your keyword/phrase.
Then everytime you get a notice that comes from a blog you go there and post a comment.
If the blog owner doesn't like it they can delete it and you wasted your time.
(Or worse: blacklist you). So take a minute or two to see what they are talking about and add some value with a decent comment. After all if you took 3 minutes to do each comment for just 2 hours straight everyday that would be 40 links per day. Which would be 320 links per week and 1280 links per month. At that pace you could very easily be taking over the #1 spot in your niche.

Blog comments are definitely a good way to get backlinks to your blog / site. It also helps you develop a network and might be able to get a guest post invitation.

I find blog commenting is frustrating as not all comments get approved, even if its a quality comment. I have wasted a lot of time blog commenting.

It is worth spending time, but it depends on the page your giving comments.
Some blog may not be considered by the google bot.
if you are providing service, yellow pages is a good option.
But, NEVER NEVER waste your time on dmoz.
that is the worst place to waste your time.

I recently started commenting on blogs. In the past week I've already seen an increase in backlinks because of those blog comments.

When people post on my blog, I usually click their links. When I see comments on other blogs that I read, again, I click their links.

If someone posts on my blog and doesnt add any useful/relevant comments, their comment gets deleted.

Yes it is a legit way, and it will give you the required backlinks if it does not use "nofollow".

Any approved blog comment will give you that nice little backlink but if you can leave comments related to your niche you will be surprised how many clickthrus you can get. I have a couple comments that consistently throw me 5 to 10 visitors/day.

These comments are on high traffic blogs and I managed to get in the first couple comments after they posted.

So in a nut shell.... Yes! It works great!

According to me legit upto some extent.
If you comment on some site related blogs then it makes sense. Also with the comment should not be just some scrap thing it should be authentic.

It can't be stressed enough, however: Don't post trash!

Every day, someone tries to leave like three comments on my blog within 2 minutes of each other. If I'm lucky, they'll repeat & summarize the post. Usually, its like "Oh, interesting! Thank you"

Well, guess what? That's the quickest way to get blacklisted by Akismet.
