I have a website: http://www.pixolia.net/ Now, web-design is a very specific realm in the internet, but how could I get my message out for an upcoming service? I have mastered code, and design, but I know nothing about SEO. I felt this'd be the best place to post this topic. I know others are asking the same question, just a tip or two would help, a lot!
SEO isn't rocket science, and it doesn't take an "expert" to do, either. I'm not a fan of SEO. I think one should do it, but once it is set up, concentrate on things that really matter, like advertising. Here is the reality of SEO, and what the "experts" do. Just follow it to the letter, and then wait. http://www.thelist.fm/search-engine-optimization.shtml
Jeeky, forget SEO. Think what your target site users want. Write that down on 1 A4 sheet. Next get another sheet of paper. Write a precis of the site using no more than 60 characters including spaces. That's your page title. Then work the site title into a single paragraph of no more than 250 characters including spaces. That's your site description. Now take 6-8 words that you think identify your site as something unique for your target audience. Make some two or three combinations. They're your keywords. Put all of the above into your meta tags. Get half a dozen good links to your site, preferably from people you know. Put some tracking code on your site. I recommend Statcounter. Its free for small users. Otherwise Google analytics is ok. Sit back.
The basic SEO is to add a title tag, meta tags, submit to google and others, promote it on forums, blah.
There are a number of great ways to generate free or low-cost traffic, especially with Web 2.0 so prevalent (user-created sites). 1. Make videos regarding your site and related material and submit to YouTube and LiveVideo. Very viral. 2. Put together a RSS Feed 3. Put together an opt-in newsletter 4. Sign up for accounts at Squidoo, Tribe.net, MySpace, StumbleUpon 5. Frequent forums centering around your site's subject. Forum sigs, of course, and email sigs. 6. Create business and postcards at VistaPrint. 7. Start a blog. Very viral. Think outside the box, be creative and have fun. Regards, Tony
