I had a kind reviewer add my website to an article on wikipedia.org as a cited reference. (Of course, the link is at the bottom of the page...in the biliography) I noticed that, today, I am now listed in aboutus.org and Alexa! I haven't submitted to DMOZ or anything else yet (we launched October 27. Hell, we're not even seo-optimized, really...) So, when Google does its dance, how much do you think Wiki is worth? Just curious, I am sure I will find out when it happens...
I think what people should reaize about Wikipedia is the following: 1. Being listed on Wikipedia is good for new traffic. Check your stats, you will see what I mean, even if your reference is listed on the bottom of the page. 2. Yes, they use no follow, so don't expect any favours there for your website. 3. In about 2-4 weeks, do a google search on your site. You will see there are other sites using Wikipedia entries and you will start seeing more links of your site on others. Being listed on Wikipedia is a good thing.
Hey - thanks for the tips That's find with me, I guess that keeps the spammers out It IS the #3 website designated under my main niche keywords, and I have discovered a little bit of traffic from it so far.
Yes but I think it is still good for traffic. I think we do link development because of traffic. So SERP is one thing. And it will be even better to have direct benefit (traffic) from these links.
Just added my page to a relevant wikipedia article. Hope they don't delete it and that it brings some traffic to my site.
Likely they will - WP is full of paranoid types who'll delete everything by someone new. Use an established user if editing. Interestingly, there appears to be a belief amongst them that Google bans sites on Wikipedia's say-so - http://stripurl.com?zYeiEV8 - though it seems unlikely to be true.
I can't really belief google bans site that are on Wikipedia. The article I added my link to has around 20 external links at the bottom, some of them are really crappy sites, but most them rank pretty good for the keywords I'm interested in.

Just that our website has only been up for a little over a month - don't be so mean ;-) And a lot of the big websites (PR8 and 9's) I am "courting" as link partners and affiliates use Alexa to decide if your site is worth a link or if they want to make you pay to advertise... Of course, our Alexa says nothing, but at least we are on there.
Wikipedia links are not vluable to the search engine point of view. Becuase the links u are getting will be under "rel=nofollow". So u will not get the search engine's value. But visitor wise u may get some value if the links remain for a long time. If they found that U have added some unrelated site or your site is not up to the mark then u site may be deleted. So I will suggest not to bring links from wikipedia. You should invest more time on other kind of links. Best of Luck.
