So, my brother recently hooked me up w/ a Dell Poweredge R200, I design websites and thought it would be sweet to get to know servers because i figure if i MAKE websites, might as well HOST them as well RIGHT? NO i wont be hosting from home, i have crummy 15/5 cable w/ comcast and i realize thats not good enough for hosting much besides maybe 1-5 sites and even that depends on how big the sites and what they have (content wise). basically my server is: 1 Xeon dual core processor 4gb ram windows server 2003 Can anyone direct me to a good windows 2003 server tutorial or give me some pointers on setting this baby up for ftp/dns/other stuff? i am planning on getting to know it and then Co-locate it here in town for security/uptime/speed reasons. edit: and YES i've googled "windows server 2003 tutorials / setups" i guess i CAN go with Debian or w/e but id prefer to use windows server since thats what i have and because im a total noob at linux
You can try install website panel. I haven't had much experiences with that but it should work. If you're wanting to learning everything from scratch.. then I think google is the only way. You can't expect someone here to give you step by step details on everything.
maybe not a step by step but if someone's got a good guide bookmarked or something, i'd much appreciate it i'm googling away as we speak, trying to read up on some different stuff but my main hope is that someone points out something that helped them. i've also got ahome server (old amd64 hp tower) that im installing debian on as i type this for my home server... going to start trying to learn each server in their own environment... cheers and thanks for the reply~ btw here's my setup: 3 screens for website development (overkill? i like it!) on my main pc. 1 screen for my rackmount servers which will be under the desk next to the shredder for now (till i get WS2k3 figured out and get some hosting) and 1 home server which will be in the other room hooked up to a tired old 37" flatscreen tv
Looks like my room lol. Well I don't really do much work on windows.. but it is simple enough. As for FTP, I prefer installing filezilla server then use the crap windows' version. The rest can be pretty easily installed and configured. And have fun with debian. I'm more of a centOS guy.. work with it everyday and love it. But debian is cool too You got the right attitude.. and now get ready to sweat and get frustrated! lol.. oh the joy of being a nerd.
tell me about it and i've got a kid on the way lol (which is partly the reason i started messing with websites again, figure i'll be up most nights anyways might as well make it productive) lol and i HAVE centos ready on dvds to be installed, my friend just said go Debian so iwent debian. i will try to get a hang of ws2k3 first since that's more pressing and then after the server is in use, i can start messing with linux distros
