So far, which link-building method has worked the best for you?

There are thousands of link-building methods out there, it's just not possible to implement all.

You can build links through forums, networking sites, social bookmarking, blogs... the list goes on.

So which link building method has worked really well for you so far? How effective is it?

I'd say forum signatures. I try social bookmarking, but it doesn't help me much as I have yet to build up a powerful account (or so I've been told).

As sukosari said, I used a combination of all the methods and that seems to work. When you talk about 'return on time/money invested', I believe "link begging" and "forum signature" are the best :)

Guest Posting to other blogs in the niche !
This is the best link building AND traffic generating technique for me!
    Try it. You won't regret.

Just curious. Do you approach the blog owners or the blog owners approach you?

Forum posting works best for me. Directory submissions is another "convenient" way to get yourself noticed.

will have to to "diversify" your sources. You will never know when will Google change its mind and discounts one or other categories of links. I have never tried forum signatures or blog comments, but have a decent count of links. I had somewhat unique content and it was not that difficult to get linked to.

directory submissions can become a pain after a while when most of the directories expect you to link them back. I have submitted my site to many such directories, without linking them back and hardly any of them cared to accept my request to list my site in their directory. Moreover, many of these directories have Fake page Ranks, so its a risk listing your site on such directories.
Forum Signature does help, social bookmarking as well, but the latter is much much tougher

Links from blogs (especially when they're related are much better than social bookmarking, forums, classifieds, etc.)
Getting some links from the biggest article directories is good for the traffic as well.
The best links are from related sites / pages so keep that in mind while building links ;)
And I'm talking about in-content or sitewide links, not footer links.

Links from blogs and forums. Directory links didn't do much for my site
The most difficult if finding blogs that are relevant for your niche that enable dofollow links. A lot of bloggers have turned links from their blogs into nofollow

Digg-like sites worked for me, blog comments and forums signatures as well.
I agree with the others: use a combination of all the methods and see which one works fine.

The best link building long term has to be article submissions with unique content. For short time social bookmarking is good to create some buzz but it will likely die off. Directories submissions is not bad either.

    My experience:
Short term link building: commenting on blogs related to my specific niche. Long term link building: social bookmarking and article submission.

I agree! But most important is to never give up on your link strategy, keep pluging away.
