    Hi,

My Toshiba laptop completely broke last week down due to a hard-disk failure so I went in to the Toshiba repair centre today to get it fixed.

I was expecting it be quite cheap as thats what many of my friends said but the Toshiba staff estimated it to cost 250 pounds, thats nearly $500 for those of you in the US!!!!

The laptops 2 years old and this is the 2nd failure its had (last time it was RAM)!!! Thats 350 pounds of repair fees... :(

Im gonna be sooooooo poor after paying for this (as Im a uni student)!!!

    Blah...

New laptops can cost (after rebates) $500. The HP/Compaq I am using was in that price range. I just got it back from a free warannty repair.

What do new ones cost in the UK?

Should have gotten the extended warranty :)

Anyway, just replace the hard disk yourself, much easier.

My department was equipped with ThinkPads last year. Four developers received them, two had to be returned. Of course, these were the corporate enterprise versions (I heard $5000 each), maybe the commercial versions are as good as my $500 Compaq.

That did cross my mind but I couldnt find a way to access the hard-disk! The laptop I had was a Toshiba Portege A100 - when it works its really good (well the same can be said about any computer I suppose) but its so unreliable... well my Portege was anyway...

I think you can buy a cheap laptop from dell from 400 pounds upwards (I actually cant remember...), thats about $750 or so I think...

It probably would have been best if I waited and bought a new one in the UK but Im in Japan right now and I really need my laptop so I can work on my sites properly... Im using my brothers desktop right now but he says I cant install new software onto it (except FileZilla - which I installed without asking him) so I cant do much. For example I was designing a new logo for my site and now I cant do that...

    Sucks...

Get a quote form your local computer shop, they'll probably charge far less, especially if you supply a hdd.

True - I really should just go for a desktop... So much more reliable...

Maybe if you could find a local to bring it in the price would go down?

Whenever I've traveled , I've found that once a supplier finds out you're not local and desperate it is shocking how often the price went up.
