SO ANGRY - finally get a popular digg for my site, server goes down

Has anyone has this problem? I use bluehost and basically whenever I start to get a lot of traffic I get an account suspended message saying I've overgone my CPU quota. I finally got a digg to the front page today only to have my blog crash 2 minutes later. I couldn't be more frustrated. Any advice?!

Shared hosting cannot handle the traffic demands of a 1st page digg. You need to get a dedicated server or at least a quality powerful VPS to handle that kind of traffic. $7/month hosting simply won't cut it. Not to mention, Bluehost is about the most budget hosting you could ever possibly get.

I am not surprised with Bluehost. With that kind of hosting service, do not expect to use high traffic websites.

If it's the blog in your signature, you should be fine.

It is possible someone else on the shared server used the CPU quota.

if you try to download backup files, most often you will be shown account suspended page. It worried me for the first time and after few minutes my site was up and running.

Use wordpress cache plugin and it could help you a lot, It stores frequently visited web pages in a cache file and that way the page does not have to make queries to the database on every page load.

I would use it, if you plan on keeping that same host and if you expect to keep getting dugg more?

I have run into this same problem with Bluehost. Many people have run into the same problem that use Bluehost and Hostmonster so you are not alone.

My solution was to find a different hosting company other than Bluehost.

Thanks all for the advice and help - after the momentary panic, I happily watched as 20,000 people came into my site, all with no problem. Still seeing the benefits of the traffic today (although it's slowed down significantly and I doubt I'll see m/any of those visitors again). Cool! My first popular digg :)

Just out of interest how many diggs do you need to make it to the front page?

Do these diggs have to come in a certain time frame?
(e.g. could if I had 300 diggs over the space of a year, will I make it on the homepage?)

Any help would much much appreciated.

Last year, i wrote a linux article and it went to second page of digg with 700+ diggs. Infact i never knew about it. Fortunately i didnt publish that in my site instead on a magazine site free which took care of the traffic.

aka the digg effect. as mentioned above, a vps or dedicated server will help, plus a good amount of bandwidth.

you can ask if the hosting provider can handle traffic from digg.

I am actually coming pretty close to making the front page of Digg myself, and am also running on BlueHost (no dedicated server), if I have WP Super Cache installed will my site be able to handle a huge traffic spike?

How much traffic can a WP Site hosted on BlueHost handle before having downtime issues?

What's the best host for dedicated server's? How much extra per month?
    Thanks
