Well they are two different marketing tactics. SMM is when a marketer actively creates content or buzz through using social media sites. For example if someone writes an article for the distinct purpose of receiving traffic through one of these sites, whether it be Digg or Stumble Upon.

Now here is where the difference starts.SMO is the act optimizing a website to allow user/others to share the content via social media sites. One thing that a webmaster5 might do to optimize one’s sites is add the”Digg This” button to the bottom of articles etc.

SMO- SMO refers to the process of refining a website (optimizing it) so that it’s awareness and content are easily spread through social mediums and online communities by users and visitors of the website. This can include anything done “on-page” such as improving the design and usability of the website so that it becomes more compelling to users, in an effort to help them spread it through social media sites. The simplest example of SMO is represented by all the “digg this” and “add to delicious” icons and links that are all over the web today.

SMM- SMM on the other hand plays more of an active role in relation to social media by referring to the creation and distribution of content and other messages through the social web by some form of viral marketing. This can be anything from creating compelling content that gets bookmarked and even hits digg’s homepage to spreading a viral video by putting it on YouTube and other social media websites. It’s about the things that are done off-site, for example, participating in online communities where your customers hang out would be an active role that falls under SMM.

These are both different methods used in internet marketing:
SMM: This is known as the social media marketing, in which user can publish or buzz there llinks through some social media websites like facebook.com, youtube.com, twitter.com, etc.
SMO: This is known as Social media optimization, this term is used to optimize or to analyse the backlinks. This is used only for the analysation.

They are very similar. SMM is when you actually market your website using social media sites. SMO is when you optimize the way you market your website on the social media sites.
