    You're missing the point completely.

SMF for sure but consider mybb as well. I just created a site in March and without any SEO work or mods I have 22k pages in Google and my SERPs are amazing.

It used to be pretty good. Now it sucks:

    1. they've stopped working on 2.x to work on version 3 which has been promised now for something like 2-3 years with no release date in sight

    2. in the meantime, they're patching 2.x versions with a hybrid of clumsy security fixes and new code from version 3 betas

    3. most of the original phpBB team seems to have disappeared and left it in the hands of well meaning but fundamentally clueless kids, from what I can see

The result is a hodge-podge of clumsy and webmaster very unfriendly code that makes upgrading from previous versions a nightmare and frequently disables the forum due to conflicts with installed MODs.

SMF is free. That's the current champ, IMO.

There are a few things about SMF I like better than vBulletin, to be honest. Now duck before the stones start flying. :D

I'm not sure what you mean by "ad-sharing mods" - do you mean like what Shawn has on this forum? ad revenue sharing? if so, no I don't know of any fopr SMF although there may be one.

Check the SMF MOD site or at the SMF Support Forum. Be warned: Check the version numbers of all MODs to make sure it's the same as the version you're using. If you're doing a new installation, I'd recommend version 1.1 RC2 - I have it running on three forums and it appearts quite stable, and that will save you time upgrading any MODs you add when the 1.1 final release comes out (which should be soon).

Assuming you're looking for ad management rather than revenue sharing, you could try this:

The creator of THIS mod was the answer to a prayer!

I have only recently experimented with forums and started with phpbb because it was the first one I came across. It was "ok"... nothing to write home about. Then I found out about smf and tested it by creating a new forum. I liked it much better right off due to the built in options, which are a lot easier to navigate. But I was still trying to figure out how to put Adsense code in. Then, low and behold, I find out someone has gotten around that by creating the above mentioned mod. The fact that it not only tells you WHERE to put the code but what each section of code is for makes it a LOT easier to figure out WTH you are doing.

I have been able to play around with the files in a way I never would have dared to with phpbb and have been successful in personalizing my site rather satisfactorily. I even converted my ex husband's old phpbb forum to smf because HE liked mine so much. I am still a novice and have MUCH to learn but having mod creators that have a little sympathy for those of us who are still chicks in the nest makes it easier to try spreading our forum wings and flying a bit. I hope for more such mods in future. In the meantime I am SO much more satisifed with smf than I ever was with phpbb :)

Yes, although it's really not that difficult to add AdSense without the mod.

That's probably true :) But my NEXT dilemma is to figure out how to delete the adsense code from the login and admin pages. I find it odd that the code was written that way. I dont want the ads there, as I believe its against rules. Not to mention that since I cant click on them anyway, why in the world even HAVE them on the admin page?

True enough. Except remember that no one except you (or any other admins you have) will ever even know they are there. It's not a violation of the ToS if only you see it.

    Again, thats true...

So my main concern will be with removing it from the login page. Although, technically, the HOME page can ALSO be a login page. :)

As for other admins, my forum is in its infancy so I am the only admin. And I need to do some research on how to keep the amount of spammers to a minumum that I can handle on my own.
