Did you try 300x250 just with white text and url in stead of black. And you could also try to make that 300x250 like your sidebar background and borders etc.. Many options possible.
Try looking at the page heatmap that Google published. Also, worth a look at their general optimisation tips. Incidentally, what is smart pricing - I've heard it mentioned but not explained anywhere. And how do you know it's happened to you?
