Considering what an FTP is suppost to do and how many other free options there are, filezilla, CuteFTP, Cyberduck (mac), I think he will make some initial money but in the long run people will switch over to more freeish software.

I think SmartFTP can be successful if they make their service significantly better
    than the free services.

Pfft. Use ftp from the command line. Or, as Hammad said above, use the Firefox add-on FireFTP and run in a browser tab.

There are tons of free alternatives. Go to download.com

I haven't really been using any GUI FTP programs lately. I'm pretty content with scp and sftp via the command line.

I do not need a paid ftp program in order to get my files on the internet. I bet that there are awesome free alternatives.

i don't get it myself, why pay, and we are talking about $40 a pop. I don't care how fancy looking the FTP program is, all I need are the functionalities of upload, download, make directory, rename, delete and some other commonly used functions. Its not a game so why fancy graphics...No offense but whoever paid $40 dollars are stupid. With that in mind I hope he didn't get rich with this update though because most should be smart enough to figure its not worth it, just common sense not to get it.

I agree, going paid made him loose a lot of followers. Anyways I use FileZilla and it's just as good and if not even better.

Lol I use a now extinct piece of software to upload my files. Oh yeah, I use shell to upload ;)

SSH Communications Security is one of the BEST SSH apps ever! Plus the SFTP (whatever its called) is awesome.

Plus it was free at the time.
