Smart pricing

Discussion in 'AdSense' started by eKstreme, May 25, 2006.

A couple of weeks ago, I had a spike in earnings, well above the average, and the earnings per click were high too. Ever since, the AdSense earnings per click dropped significantly - I'm earning about a 1/3rd of what I used to earn, sometimes less!

I tried playing around with the ads and added some new ones in an attempt to do *something*, but that's not working.

What can I do to fix that? I think it's smart pricing, but I'm not 100% sure. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

    Cheers.

smart is just something that google uses to determine the qaulity of a click by seeing if it converts or not. If you have high converting clicks, you get a higher price per click. If not, they can reduce the price you get so advertisers pay less.

I really don't think anyone should have to worry about smart price. You can't do anything about it. You can't control your visitors. It will go up and down every week, month, year.

I dont agree with the not worrying about smart pricing ... If it is a measure of the conversion rate of your clicks the it is something you can control to some extent by gaining more targeted traffic.

yea, that's true...getting better targetted visitors. However, instead of focusing too much on smart pricing, I would focus more on optimizing your CTR. Even if you get a 10% or 30% ppc decrease, if you can increase your CTR your ecpm would go up.

even with targetted visitors there's no garentee for anything. That's why I say don't worry about it. There's too many factors, known and uknown that can determine your ppc.

    Well two things:

    1. It's not MY fault if my visitors do not convert well. AdSense controls the ads, and the advertisers control the landing pages. I can't do much for either, so why am I getting penalized for it?

    2. Which brings me to the original question. How can I appease the Great and Mighty Google so that I get out of this rut?

And where is the competition when you need it? Yahoo, get your act together!

    Very funny :D

But my rant stands. As long as others are not willing to compete for Google's customers, Google can do whatever they please.

Smart Pricing does make sense for a PPC ad. Advertisers want people to buy from them -- by utilizing Smart Pricing, advertisers don't have to pay much for sites that don't focus on creating interest for customers in a given market. The great majority of AdSense sites out there are only trying to get a lot of clicks no matter what (using whatever trickery is possible). I did a test on one of my sites (totally unblended ad very annoying, focused on promoting the sale of products, etc). I saw my average click go way up (almost 500% in 3 months) even tough my eCPM and CTR is down. I'm guessing the people who came to the site realized I was promoting the sale of products, and the ads were very relevant, so my clicks might have become purchases. Good for the advertisers, good for Google, therefore good for me.

Why should an advertiser pay more than 1 or 2 cents for a click that just clicks the back button because they realized they were tricked into going to an ad site?

At the beginning of this week the Google bot started serving ads that were relevant to a particular article which had nothing to do with my site really. My CPM climbed to the highest it's ever been and my earnings topped $50 a day. I messed around with my ads and my layout thinking I needed ads which were relevant to my site (urban entertainment/gossip) and when the bot came back through and changed my ads back to relevant ads my eCPM plummeted. :(
