Being an existing Linux Bronze shared hosting client, my friend is looking forward to open up a small e-commerce online store, hence, been looking at the available hosting options and wondering which one will be best suitable for him. He has been thinking about setting up similar to start with... do you know which option would be a good choice just to launch a small e-commerce site. Many thanks

I will suggest your friend to look for a specialized hosting, like magento specialized hosting or prestashop specialized hosting (depending on what script does he use). Because the server should have been pre-optimized specifically for that script. (and yes it really matters in terms of performance) this is an example : http://www.artio.net/internet-services/magento-hosting
Agreed, specialized solutions are better fit for your demands. I suggest leveltenhosting services to try
I will suggest hostagator business hosting. and for online shopping store my suggestion is Opencart cms for online store, open cart is very easy to configure. during configuration your 90% requirement is fulfilled.
I suppose that time-tested and trusted magento optimized web hosting provider will meet your expectations.
It takes a lot to get any small business going, and choosing the right eCommerce software package is just one of many steps.
If your friend is serious, then go for prestashop and get a bluehost hosting. Thats what I did and it's the best. No issues till now. Working fine.
I also heard some positive on leveltenhosting.com that is specialized in providing stable e-commerce solutions, try them
You should check what Volusion offers. Here's one review that says it can be a safe bet. ecommerce-software-review[dot]toptenreviews[dot]com/volusion-review[dot]html
We recommend PrestaShop - apart from being highly user friendly and easy to customise - it's scripts place less demand on the server than many other similar featured shopping carts.
