I noticed in my traffic reports that there was a huge spike in traffic over a span of two days. I can't tell whether or not it's a DDoS attack or not.
I doubt its a denial of service attack, it could have been search engine spiders having a spaz. i get large increases in traffic every now and then. dDOS attacks are pretty obvious, they take down servers....
a ddos would likely take down your server. Do your referrer logs have any clues about where that traffic came from? (Check for a common IP address and then do a whois lookup on that IP) Does this high traffic also show up on your tracker logs? (like gostats for example)
Come on people, stop guessing what the hell a DDos attack is. Don't say the stupid obvious "YEA THEY TAKE DOWN SERVERS" If its a small DDos attack and your on a good dedicated server, it probablly didn't go down. It looks like it was just a one time deal and if it was a DDos attack it wasen't successful since after the 20th you were fine. Your going to need to provide some logs
Well what do distributed denial of service attacks do " Mr Know it all " Ive dealt with a lot more attacks than you ever have since birth. Considering ddos attacks are designed to take DOWN servers, and they are USED to take down servers... Stupid obvious - How about you suggest something instead of pointing out the obvious
Suggestion "LOGS" As stated before, since you don't even know if its a DDos attack or if the server went down. Thats cool that youve dealth with many DDos attacks, Ive dealt with a few that were bigger anything you could ever imagine.
Indeed, it's very possible that the server didn't go down. Looking at the information provided; it's just not enough to say for sure what really happened.
