Slow Site - .htaccess file looks large, how to reduce size?

    Hi guys,

I've noticed my wordpress blog is running quite slowly and was wondering if maybe the .htaccess file is the reason. When opening up the file it has a lot of code, and I don't really understand what any of it does (I think maybe I have plugins installed that automatically write to the file).
The size of the file is 12kb. I've copied and pasted its contents below.
Could anyone let me know if I could delete parts of it, in order to speed up the site - so I'd quite like to know what the file is setup to do currently...

Half that stuff should not even be in that file as it should be done at the higher levels.

Also, that shouldnt be slowing your site down. It might be too many sites hosted on that server,

Is your site hosted on the shared server or dedicated server? If the website is hosted on the shared server, then its most likely to be cause of the site being slow. Perhaps some other website eating up all server resources and that affect your website.

Its on a shared server so maybe its that. But surely its more likely to be down to the setup of the site - wouldn't you check the site before assuming its the server?
Also, if the htaccess file was so big (as it is) then wouldn't this contribute to the slow load time or is it not really a problem?

Would appreciate any advice on what the htaccess file is currently set up to do.. thanks for the replies so far.

We have had clients with even bigger and longer htaccess files and their sites have been next to instant loading. It's more then likely the server is overloaded of your site has a poorly coded plugin.

What half that htaccass file does is what we do on the actual http process, which is improve page load times by caching.
