Slow directory listings on Linux

    I have a directory or logs files that I'd like users to access. A number of my sites are Windows-based and the directory listing is quick. On my Linux-hosted site, the listing is terribly slow.

    I've traced the httpd process and found that it "lstat", "open", "read", and "close" every file in the directory. I've tried adjusting indexing options but nothing seems to avoid this reading of every file.

    Here's the directory entry from httpd.conf:
    <Directory "/scfs3/cm_tool/admin/automerge_log">
    Options Indexes -FollowSymLinks
    IndexOptions FancyIndexing IgnoreCase SuppressDescription SuppressIcon
    IndexOrderDefault Descending Date
    AllowOverride None
    /Directory
