Slipping down the rankings?!

After making some good progress over the past 5 months my rankings seem to be slipping down the Google rankings.

Nothing too drastic at the moment maybe 5 or 6 places on certain keywords but a drop all the same.

How can I stop this 'slip' turning into a landslide?

Start cultivating quality backlinks. I know easier said than done. Also make sure to look at your one page and off page optimization.

Its probably more to do with what your competitor sites are doing than you actually doing anything wrong.

You have to "keep up with the Jones's" at all times.

Don't ever get compacent - if you are adding back-links then keep adding more as Smyrl says.

whitespider nailed it. A slow slide generally reflects a rise by another site.

Look at your competition to see what they are doing to rise. Compare their current design to the cache in archive.org to see if was an on-page optimization.

Look up their link history in Marketleap (if the history is there) to check for an increase.

Yea... I agree with all the comments above. Some site owners (like me :() start buliding links for about 1-2 months and then stop. I recently realised that linkbuilding is a continual process that should not stop.

And how do I find out what my competitors are doing?

Seems that there is an awful lot of competition out there, some them with the most appauling websites!!

Doesnt seem to make too much sense other than it started happening when I stopped my Overture marketing

In addition to continually creating backlinks, I'd suggest you continually update your content, as well. Static sites gradually lose favor within the SERPs.

Buy 'SEO Elite'. It will provide a thorough analysis of what your competitors are doing, and allow you to "one up" them in all areas. It basically walks you through the steps you need to take - couldn't be simpler. :)
