Size Regulation on Contest Forum

I believe this is the correct section to post this.

I've recently noticed alot of designers submitting work via tags that basically take up the entirity of my 19" monitor meaning the standard 1024x768 resolution cant see most of the designs. Now i find this quite annoying as a designer and must be also quite annoying for contest holders.

What are other designers/contest holders opinions on this?

    Who are the main culprits?

Hi, it's not the tag that causes the problem, it's the size of the image the person is displaying. I guess we have varying size monitors and resolutions, and sometimes it's not obvious when submitting a design that others may have problems with it.

I guess if there was a standard max size it could help. I've probably been a culprit on occasion - apologies if I have.

Of course i can zoom out but when on a 1280X1024 resolution i dont think you should have to zoom out. It is quite tedious when a design is submitted which basically takes up the majority of a thread.

Designers dont have to take the extra 3 seconds to resize an image they can always upload to a site such as imageshack which provides a thumbnail tag or alteneratively just link to the image. I agree with victoria ann that a restriction should be put in place.

That makes sense..every contest holder must dl a firefox addon or switch browser to see the large designs when some naive designers could spend 3 seconds solving there problem.

This isnt a single user problem so dont give a single user solution.

    What exactly is the problem?

Most designs are put up to their actual resolution so the contest holder can SEE what they're getting. If you resize it it loses quality.

The size of the image is the size it will be when it's coded into HTML and is working as a website - does that mean if you saw the website you'd have to resize the browser because it's too big?

If you have a problem with too big images than state that in your contests - but for other contest holders I'm sure they don't see this a problem and don't want their entrants to resize their entries.

Personally I like looking at all the designs people come up with in 100% resolution, and when I'm done I scroll down the page or click off - and hey! It's gone!

For optimisation purposes thumbnails are much more efficient it takes one click.

It's not a big problem, just an observation, I believe.

Yes it wasn't a complaint i was wondering what other designers opinions were on this and the majority of replies recieved weren't even worth it. I was looking for some depth to the issue or observation as the case maybe.

But hey i guess the pessimistic replies are to be expected.

    Reworded
The standard monitor resolution is 1024x768 (the design base for most default webpages) however some designs are being posted much larger than this and can cause problems for the viewers of the thread especially those on slow connections with cache trouble.

My Question to you: Do you feel this is a problem? or a mild annoyance? if so what workarounds are for this i agree with the zoom function on most browsers works well but can still cause issues with filesize.

Thankyou to those who post a valid opinion on this not a case of "lets all go out and buy bigger monitors".

I would've believed this had you not asked this in the original post:

This question doesn't seem to fall into the premise of a "general wondering", and it sounds like you're trying to find certain people to "pick on" cause they don't resize their images.

Designers tend to have bigger screens given their occupation - don't begrudge them because they can't take 2 minutes out of their time to resize their design to make it look ok for YOU.

Another point is, most designers should know to create their designs to fit screens from 800x600 to 1024x768. If their design is within those dimensions then they should NOT have a problem fitting on your screen size of 1024 x 768.

Anyone who designs larger than that may need to think about how it will look for the web, but they still shouldn't have to resize their images for your convenience.

Again as I stated earlier my screen resolution is 1280x1024. I am not doing this for my OWN convenience I'm basically wondering others opinions and dont expect personal attacks towards myself. I am not begrudging anyone yet sometimes it is tedious.

I dont get why you think I am complaining about this? its not a case of "oh i cant see image please resize" its more along the lines of "what are your opinions on this?". The reason i would like others opinions on this is that it could spiral into a constructive debate perhaps moving onto designing for specific browsers or problems designers have had with multiple resolutions before.

Sigh it seems cant start an intellectual debate without being targetted.

I haven't actually attacked you. I simply asked what your problem was?

I'm a DESIGNER and this is targeted at ME. This isn't MY problem - it's YOURS.

If you wanted an intellectual debate about whether or not big images are annoying (how that could turn into an intellectual debate is beyond me) maybe you should've started your post without it being about YOU.

Also, do you have any examples of pages where this has annoyed you?

I'm also using 1280x1024 and would like to see the size of the designs that have annoyed you.

I felt it appropriate to ask for opinions and post my own to see if people agree with any of my points or not? and by your logic i'm attacking myself because I am a designer.

I do have examples of threads however i wouldnt want to target specific designers. Heck we've all done it at times.
