Sitewide or Homepage only links better for SEO?

From an SEO perspective, is it better to have a links from the homepage only of a website, or to have a site-wide link like a blogroll from that site?

I would have thought this was an obvious question - the more links the better right?

The strange thing is that I've been approached over time by different link buyers looking to buy links from my sites, but they have been explicit about only wanting a link from the homepage and no other pages on the site.

Am I missing something here? Is there some sort of SEO advatage to be gained from only having a homepage link form a site?

I'd personally prefer that my blog is listed in the blogroll from a site rather than a single link from the homepage, because you would get many more links, and sometimes there are pages that rank even better than the site as a whole.

On the other hand, some people think that the homepage will rank better than the individual pages (which is not necessarily true, deep linking may push up a quality page very high, while the blog itself may be just so-so.).

A further problem with a blogroll is also that it might be dynamic - you may have a list of 10 blogs on your blogroll, and only 5 may be displayed at a time, hence that people prefer a static link. But, as I said, I'd be rather on the blogroll.
