"Sitewide Linking" Question

Discussion in 'Link Development' started by nlgordaz, Apr 30, 2005.

My site has a few hundred different pages that I optimize for 1-3 keywords each. Each page is dedicated to a different breed of dog and the pages lists dog breeder advertisements. If I got a dog breed description website to put a few links on each one of their dog breed pages linking to my related dog breed pages with a few different links in order to cover all three of my keywords by using my three keywords in the anchor texts, would this be considered "sitewide linking?" So basically, their Doberman Pinscher page would link to my Doberman pinscher page with a few different links from their same page. Is this “sitewide linking?” Can I get penalized for this?

Sitewide linking is typically having the same link pointing to your site from every page on another site. It would be a good idea trying to change up the link text if possible.

Site-wide links are as dcristo said are when your links are present on every single page of another site.

basically there are footer links present at the bottom of every single page of a site pointing to your site.

The SEs state that there is very little a competitor can do to harm your site. I take this as if sitewides were bad, you would just point sitewides to all your competitors. Now if you recip to these sites then it can hurt you, but one ways I wouldnt think they would. If anyone else has an opinion on this please share it, I am no expert.

I know that google will discount the link values but yahoo and msn dont seem to mind as far as I can tell.

I have a couple sites wide links from all pages of our Real Estate Marketing Forums and believe those are good, look at every vBulletin having the same links on the bottom leading to the non forum home page. This cannot be a bad thing, could it?

I don't think it's bad as long as you don't over do it. I have a site that does good and has a few site wide links.

Some I never asked for....... no really. I was checking links one day and I found two dudes that had give me site wide links. Thought it was wierd at first cause I had no freaking idea who these people were. But then 10 secs. later I said "COOL."

I am giving out a few in my real estate directory and they seem to have a very good impact on their Yahoo! rankings for some reason.

From my experiences and research sitewides arent bad but they arent any more useful than a singular link. Basically sitewides arent neccesary but they shouldnt get you penalyzed or anything like that.

I agree with WeRASkitzzo. At the end of the day though, I'd prefer a singular link over a site-wide link.

They may not help you in Google. I am sure they don't hurt you in Google either. I do think they help you in Yahoo and MSN. I am still testing my theory on this though.

What if your using sitewide linking from two different sites on your same server, only each link goes to a different page on your site using different anchor text, would it still be counted only as one link. Would this be better than just having all the links go to the same page.

Sitewides are fine, and can be very useful - but it's not the sort of strategy to use in the short-term - definitely for long-term objectives, IMO.
