Sites that request a link is placed on your site first...

    Hi there,

I'm trying to promote one of my websites by doing link exchanges with other similar websites. The problem I'm having is that most of the sites request a link to their site from yours before you contact them. I don't have a problem doing this, it's just the fact that it takes ages for them to get back to you, if at all. I hardly get a reply after placing their link on my site, so they are basically getting a free back link but I'm unsure whether they are busy/away/don't want to be involved with linking to my website.

I don't suppose there are any hints/tips or ways around this sort of thing? It feels like I'm doing lots of works linking out to other sites before knowing if they will return the favour.

    Thanks for any help.
    Matt

link exchange is not the best thing to do in my opinion..

buy a few wordpress themes and that will get you a couple of hundred links.

spend $30-40 for a blog post to be posted on 200-300 different blogs.

get some one to submit to a thousand directories for $40-50

buy a few blog posts from bloggers.will cost you $5-10 per post.

if you not planning to invest anything then just develop a goof wordpress.com and blogspot blogs network may be 30-40 of them to support your main website.
In my opinion wordpress blogs are better if you trying to build a pyramid.

    Hope this helps :)

Thank you, rep has been given.

I've not really thought about paid advertising, at the moment I'm going to try and get lots of link exchanges with relevant sites and submit to free directories etc. I will probably end up creating a blog or something and trying to promote it from there too.
Just wondering, whats a wordpress theme?

    Thanks again.

If this is happening, ask them to link you first then link them. I see alot of offers for different things on here and then the person disappears and never answers you back. I've had three times in the last few weeks where someone wants to trade something and nobody every hears from them. I would remove their links if they did not follow through.

It's mainly happening on other established websites - I just google one of my sites' key words and am trying to link exchange with these websites. It's hard to tell if they are just ignoring you because they can't be bothered, or whether they don't check their emails. Some of them say the link must be present on your site before they consider you, so I guess you have to try.
Maybe I should set a deadline of a week or so before I remove their link.

I think that is a good idea. I wouldn't trade that way because most of the time they just want you to link to them and hope you never check back. I would get a promise from the other person before you trade. Just be careful because if you put too many links on your site, I heard that it lowers your sites value. They say it makes your site look spammy.

Link exchange is not easy because you need to convince the owner of the site that you have quality and trusted link. Before they link you, they evaluated it terms of page rank, traffic, quality, and content. You need to confirm if you have added the link , sometimes they removed the link.

I usually assess other people's requests for links to see if the owner is "link-friendly". Then I will put up the link first and request for an exchange. If there is no response after a week or so, I remove it.

You'd be surprised by how many higher PRs are willing to exchange links. They are really nice. Just ask! It's free.

Personally, I like to negotiate first. Most of the sites that put you up first want you to use their specific link text to link back but are unwilling to change yours.

For me it is better to tell me where you would (not have) put my link, let me know what you would like and let me answer back if I am interested.

If you want to try them out, I suggest an external include file to list your reciprocal links so if you don't see results in a week you can remove those sites by just editing a single file.
