Sitemaps Need URL Extension?

    This may sound like a completely noob question, but do the sitemaps you submit to Google need a URL extension like .php or .xml? Obviously it needs to be in XML format but am curious if it needs to have the url extension or not or if it can end in something like /sitemap instead of /sitemap.xml

    when you submit your sitemap to Google you have to submit it as it is.. so if it ends in sitemap.xml that's what you submit

    Yes sure you need to give an extension to the sitemaps that you create.
