Sitemaps and Indexing

I've been building sitemaps for one of my sites every couple of days and submitting them. Google popped in for a short time and then left. 2 days later my site showed up in the index with just the main page.

After a couple more submits, then spider came back and did some more, then 280 pages showed up in the index 2 days later.

It's been sitting like that for about a week now.

I made a few changes to the site, built a new sitemap and submitted it over the weekend. The spider showed up at my site yesterday morning and just left about an hour ago, after cruising through over 7500 pages... mostly pages that it hadn't hit before.

I'm hoping I'll see a big jump in pages in the Google index in a day or two! :p

I have the same problem with a site of mine. What did you use to build your site map?

GSiteCrawler from SOFTPlus. It's slow, but it gets the job done. Eventually. ;-)

Ok, the pattern has broken. Googlebot hasn't left my site in days, but every day for the last few days the amounts of indexes pages in Google's index have dropped by 1. 2 days ago is was 278, yesterday it was 277 and today it's 276. Odd!

Well, today is even worse. I've lost 90% of the indexed pages, I'm down to 23 in Google's index. But one of my keywords went up to #3 today while another one is gone altogether.

    :(

I see this happen alot, I wouldn't really worry about indexed levels on a daily basis. G seems to fluctuate in the short term.

G-Site does well with Google maps, Xenu does well with Yahoo maps.

AutoMapIt.com sitemaps do both, plus HTML, plus OPML... I don't even have to remember to update any of my maps with them, it's done for me.

As far as indexing, I'd expect it to go up and down until it settles in at the next update.

    i'm having the same problem.
my site has about 3 weeks old and of course PR0.
google indexed it rather quickly but first only one page, then added 4. and so on. I was very happy when google indexed almost all the news from 03 Dec 2005 (my site is a news site and is changing daily) -> so i have 155 pages in google's index. But from that day google didn't index any of my news at all!
why is this happening? i have a google sitemap and i don't know what to do to get indexed faster.

You can probably expect to stay at PR0 until the new PRs get released sometime next year.

That many pages is not uncommon at all especially for forums, directories, and article sites.

    Mike,

Where did you get the theme for your forumowners.com site? It looks very sharp.

    Hi everyone!
Two weeks ago, I submited google sitemap.Size is 215KB. I read somewhere that size must be

no more than 100Kb, so I need now to split that sitemap into three sitemaps. That's Ok, but

I don't know what to do....
    1. Submit three new sitemaps and delete old sitemap, or
    2. Submit three new sitemaps and live that old sitemap?

For two weeks, Google crawled 210 pages. Site has approximately 1400pages. Is that OK?

Would he crawl pages faster if I split sitemap?
    Thanks for help.

I think that 2 weeks is good score.

I dont know how big sitemap should be, but if status is OK than sitemap is completely readable by google.
