i had a quick question about the purpose of sitemaps? If you submit a sitemap to major search engines like google/yahoo it helps them crawl your site to better index your pages correct?

when google/yahoo index your pages is that another way of creating backlinks in their datebase?

    thanks

When all your pages are indexed with google, it has more chances to show up your sites during search results. Remember, only indexed pages will be shown during searches.

To submit sitemap in different search engine doesn't mean that you will get back links. It just suggest to crawler to crawl submitted pages.

Having your links in sitemaps does not gaurantee that a search engine will crawl that page. All you are basically doing is making the search engine aware of the existance of the page.

This is particularly usefull on sites with unorthadox navigation or complicated deep links etc.

Links within an XML sitemap do not count towards backlinks.
