Try to be patient and not worry about it. Personally, I don't like resubmitting very often - I'd rather Google download it as it sees fit. I just don't like making Google think I'm overanxious. What it really likes is when it finds tons of new content without you telling it everytime there's an update.

    how big is the sitemap?

Normally, I can see a sitemap downloaded from google with minutes of submittal, and generally processed within a couple hours for a 20,000 link sitemap.

Nothing will happen to your site, if you resubmit your sitemap very often. Sitemaps are helping google to index the web better, so why would they "punish" you for helping them?

When google is doing other major processing (BL or PR updates) then the WMT Submission slows down. I have had 3 site "pending" for a week now. So I delete the site map listings and re-add them. The next day they have been read.

I think this depends on how often google visits your site in the first place. If google spiders your site daily like DP, then the sitemap should update quickly. If google only spiders your site once a week then they will download your sitemap the next time they spider your site.

sitemaps do sometimes take a long time to update into Google, nothing to worry about though, just think of the billions of requests they must have.
